⛓️💥 Last week, our MCAPS leader Judson Althoff shared two inspiring messages that still echo in my mind:
💬 “The barrier to innovation is psychological.”
💬 “Most people don’t run up against the edge of their potential; they run up against the edge of their beliefs.”
Those lines pushed me to examine my own security enablement approach in this agentic AI era. The takeaway is clear: if our beliefs stay small, our breakthroughs stay small. Yet innovation without security and compliance is a risk, not a win.
🔑 Belief-Shifting Practices
🔹 Challenge your beliefs: Pick one limiting assumption about AI security (for example, “labeling sensitive data slows us down”) and run a quick proof of concept that tests the opposite.
🔹 Commit to continuous learning: Allocate 30 minutes each day for fresh learning on emerging AI/ML security patterns, new Azure AI features, AI threat models or the latest Microsoft security releases.
🔹 Collaborate across disciplines: Security isn’t just a checklist—it’s a design principle. Pair security leads with App/AI development leads from day one so that “secure by design” is built in, not bolted on.
🛡️ Put Agentic Security in Action
🔹 Microsoft Defender for Cloud‘s threat protection for AI services identifies threats to generative AI applications in real time and helps respond to security issues.
🔹 The Defender Cloud Security Posture Management (CSPM) secures generative AI applications throughout their entire lifecycle across hybrid and multicloud environments.
🔹 Defender XDR bring it all together in the unified security operations platform, correlating signals across all security tools.
🔹 Security Copilot agents enable autonomous handling of high-volume security and IT tasks.
📜 Activate AI Compliance & Data Governance
🔹 Microsoft Purview Data Security Posture Management (DSPM) for AI provides a central management location to help you quickly secure data for AI apps and proactively monitor AI use.
🔹 Purview Data Security Investigations uses AI services and tools to help you quickly review and take action on items associated with security incidents. AI-related services include Vector search, Categorization and Examination.
🔹 Purview Data Loss Prevention enforces policies that block unauthorized sharing of training data, models, or prompts – all without hindering collaboration.
🔹 Purview Audit supplies immutable logs that satisfy regulatory evidence requirements and speed incident investigations.
🚀 Stretch Goals
• Lead an AI-security proof of concept that covers the full cycle: build, defend, govern, and audit.
• Share the outcomes internally and externally where is possible.
Innovation flourishes when belief barriers fall and security foundations hold firm. I am committed to both.
